The key changes affecting strategic planning and reporting are:

• The NELP (National Education and Learning Priorities) have been removed
• Boards now have one paramount objective supported by nine other objectives
• Boards must have an attendance management plan in place by the start of Term 1 2026
• The start date for the board's next strategic plan has been extended to 1 January 2027

What should you do now?

Consider whether your current strategic plan remains fit for purpose.

If it does, great! You can extend it to cover another year and capture any minor changes in your annual implementation plan for 2026.

If it isn’t fit for purpose and requires significant change, your board can amend it.

You will, however, need to consult with your community and submit the amended plan to the Ministry, as per Section 141open_in_new of the Education and Training Act 2020.
