Special character positions in state-integrated schools

One of the most distinctive aspects in a state-integrated school is the role of special character positions (also known as “tagged positions”).

Special character positions are one of the key mechanisms used to protect a school's special character for future generations.

What is a special character position?

It is a teaching position that carries responsibility for supporting, promoting, or preserving the special character of the school.

Staff appointed to these roles must be willing and able to uphold the school's special character as part of their professional responsibilities.

In some situations, the position will have an important role in carrying out appropriate religious instruction.

The exact expectations will vary depending on the school's character and the nature of the position.

However, the underlying principle remains the same: these roles help ensure the special character is not simply stated in documents but is actively demonstrated in the life of the school.

How do you appoint to special character roles?

Your board remains the employer and retains responsibility for employment decisions.

However, when dealing with special character positions, your board must work in partnership with the proprietor.

Primary schools must ensure they comply withclause 52 of Schedule 6 of the Education and Training Act 2020.open_in_new

Secondary and area schools may follow the process as set out for primary schools, or a different process according to your integration agreement and/or your proprietor’s practice.

For further guidance, contact your proprietor or local diocesan office.

Questions your board could ask

  • Do we understand which positions in our school are identified for special character?

  • Are our appointment processes aligned with legal requirements and our integration agreement?

  • Have we consulted appropriately with the proprietor?

  • Are the expectations associated with special character positions clearly defined?

  • How do we know staff in special character positions are contributing to the school's special character?
